Samsung Electronics on Tuesday introduced its thinnest premium smartphone yet, the Galaxy S25 Edge, aiming to attract younger consumers seeking lighter and more compact devices while gaining an edge over Apple in the high-end segment.

Set for release in South Korea on May 23 and in the U.S. on May 30, the S25 Edge will gradually reach about 30 countries, including key markets in China and Europe, the company announced. The smartphone starts at $1,099.

Engineered to meet demand from users in their 20s and 30s for sleeker, more portable devices, the S25 Edge features a 6.7-inch (170 mm) screen and a body thickness of just 5.8 mm. The device is slightly larger than the base S25 model but only marginally heavier.

"Users clearly expressed the need for slimmer, more convenient devices without compromising power. That shaped our design choices," Samsung said. To meet those requirements, the company restructured internal components, including redesigning the printed circuit board and streamlining thermal systems.

The new model integrates Samsung's latest AI tools, such as multimodal artificial intelligence that enables real-time interaction through both voice and camera input. These features allow users to point their camera at objects or scenes and receive immediate information or assistance.

Samsung did not specify the production facility for the S25 Edge but highlighted that the new design maintains performance and thermal efficiency. “We developed a slimmer vapor chamber to match the reduced profile. The device was built with stability in mind,” said Moon Sung-hoon, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “We’re confident in the phone’s ability to function without overheating.”

Market analysts see the timing of the S25 Edge launch as a strategic move. With Apple expected to unveil a thinner iPhone later this year, Samsung’s early release could attract buyers in search of a more compact design.

“Launching a few months ahead of Apple gives Samsung a chance to attract users focused on portability,” said Ryu Young-ho, senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities. “This seems like a calculated effort to tap into that segment of the market.”

According to research firm Counterpoint, Samsung led global smaments in Q1 2025 with a 20 per cent market share, slightly ahead of Apple’s 19 per cent.

However, Samsung recently warned that rising tariffs and economic uncertainty could impact shipments in the second quarter, potentially affecting overall demand.
